Agni — अग्नि

The Digestive Fire — the cornerstone of Ayurvedic health

In Ayurveda, Agni (digestive fire) is the central principle of metabolism and transformation. All digestion, absorption, assimilation and metabolic activity depends on the quality and strength of Agni. The Charaka Samhita states: "Ayu (life), varna (complexion), balam (strength), arogyam (health), utsaha (enthusiasm), upachaya (nourishment), prabha (glow), ojas (vitality), teja (lustre)... all these depend on Agni."

What is Agni?

13 Types of Agni

There are 13 types of Agni: Jatharagni (central digestive fire), 5 Bhutagnis (elemental fires), and 7 Dhatvagnis (tissue fires). Jatharagni is the master — all others depend on it.

Agni & Ama

When Agni is impaired, food is not fully digested, creating Ama — a sticky, toxic residue. Ama is considered the root cause of most disease in Ayurveda.

Agni & Ojas

Strong Agni produces Ojas — the refined essence of all body tissues, responsible for immunity, vitality and spiritual radiance. Weak Agni depletes Ojas.

How to Support Agni (All Types)

Eat main meal at midday when Agni is strongest (10am–2pm)
Sip warm water or herbal tea throughout the day
Avoid ice-cold drinks — they extinguish Agni
Chew food thoroughly — digestion begins in the mouth
Leave 1/3 of stomach empty for digestive enzymes
Sit quietly for 5–10 minutes after meals (Vajrasana pose)
Ginger with rock salt before meals to kindle Agni
Avoid eating when stressed, upset, or distracted
Do not eat again before previous meal is digested (4–6 hours)
Triphala churna at night supports healthy elimination
