What is Rudraksha?

Rudraksha (Sanskrit: रुद्राक्ष, IAST: Rudrākṣa) means "Eye of Rudra (Shiva)" — from Rudra (Shiva) + Aksha (eye/seed). These seeds of the Elaeocarpus ganitrus tree are considered sacred to Lord Shiva. Each bead has natural lines (mukhis — "faces") running from top to bottom, ranging from 1 to 21.

Origin Story — Shiva Purana

According to the Shiva Purana (Vidyeshvara Samhita 25.1), Shiva meditated for thousands of years for the welfare of all beings. When He opened His eyes, tears of compassion fell to the earth — wherever they landed, Rudraksha trees grew. The seeds of those trees became the Rudraksha beads worn today by Shiva devotees.
