📚 THE 4 ASHRAMAS — Life's Four Stages

The four Ashramas (आश्रम, āśrama) are the four stages of life in Hinduism. Each stage corresponds to an age and set of duties (Dharma) within the broader framework of Varna-Ashrama Dharma.

1. BRAHMACHARYA (ब्रह्मचर्य) · Age: 8–25

Student life. Study of the Vedas under a Guru in Gurukula. Celibacy (Brahmacharya) is essential. Foundation of all later life.

2. GRIHASTHA (गृहस्थ) · Age: 25–50

Householder life. Marriage, family, profession, social duties. Called "the central Ashrama" — supports all other three stages.

3. VANAPRASTHA (वानप्रस्थ) · Age: 50–75

Forest-dweller / Retirement. Gradual withdrawal from active life. Increased spiritual practice; some continued social engagement.

Complete renunciation. Liberation-seeking. All social ties released. No fixed abode; no property; Brahman alone is sought.
