📚 BHAGAVAD GITA 4.13 — Complete Analysis
The Most Debated Verse on the Varna System
THE VERSE IN FULL
चातुर्वर्ण्यं मया सृष्टं गुणकर्मविभागशः।
तस्य कर्तारमपि मां विद्ध्यकर्तारमव्ययम्॥
"The fourfold Varna system was created by Me, according to the division of qualities and actions. Though I am its creator, know Me as non-doer, unchangeable." — BG 4.13
WHY THIS MATTERS
The key word: "guṇakarma-vibhāgaśaḥ" — "by division of gunas and karma"
Guna = innate quality (Sattva/Rajas/Tamas)
Karma = actions/work
Central debate: Can Varna change if Guna/Karma changes? Or is birth permanent?
THE FIVE INTERPRETIVE POSITIONS (side by side)
| Commentator | Period | Position |
|---|---|---|
| Shankaracharya | 8th c CE | Birth AND guna — both |
| Ramanuja | 11th c CE | Birth primary, guna develops |
| Vivekananda | 19th c | Spiritual merit — not birth |
| Arya Samaj | 19th c | Strictly guna-karma only |
| Tilak | 19th–20th c | Guna-karma emphasis |
AMBEDKAR'S RESPONSE
Even if interpreted as purely guna-karma, the social system that emerged from this framework was used to justify hereditary hierarchy. The institutional reality, not the theoretical interpretation, is what caused harm.
