In Hinduism, a vahana (Sanskrit: वाहन, “that which carries”) is the mount or vehicle of a deity. Far from being mere transportation, vahanas are deeply symbolic — they represent aspects of the deity’s nature, powers, and philosophical teachings.

Each vahana has its own mythology, personality, and worship traditions. Many are worshipped independently and have their own temples and festivals.

The relationship between a deity and their vahana represents the mastery of consciousness over the animal instincts. For example, Durga riding a lion shows the taming of wild nature through divine power, while Ganesh on a mouse shows that even the mightiest intellect can navigate the smallest paths.

Vahanas appear prominently in temple sculpture, festival processions, and ritual iconography across all Hindu traditions.
